commissioner, agriculture commissioner, state school superintendent, three Supreme Court judges, five Court of Appeals judges, and several superior court judges – including two Middle Judicial District Superior Court Judge positions, which are currently held by Judge Robert S. Reeves and Tommy J. Smith and serve Toombs County. In addition to these offices, several local leadership positions are up for grabs in the area.
In Montgomery County, elections will be held for representatives on the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners and Board of Education, as well as for the Magistrate Judge position. Qualifying will cost $108.00 per candidate for the County Commission race to determine who will represent District 4 – which is currently represented by Vice Chairman Clarence Thomas – and District 5 – which is currently represented by Commissioner Leland Adams. Qualifying costs $72.00 per candidate for the Board of Education, which will determine representatives for the next term for District 4 – currently represented by Vice Chairman Eugene “Pete” Ward – and District 5 – currently represented by Board Member John O’Conner. Qualifying for the magistrate judge position costs $1,495.01 per candidate; Judge Ashley Thornton currently holds the position.
Qualifying for these offices will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Monday, March 2, through Thursday, March 5, and from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Friday, March 6, at the Board of Elections and Registrations office in the Montgomery County Government Annex, located at 251 S. In Toombs County, two commissioners recently resigned from their positions to pursue a different political office; thus, in addition to the scheduled general election, two offices will be voted on in a special election, which will coincide with the general election on May 19.
Toombs County Commission Chairman David Sikes and Commission Vice Chairman Tommy Rollins resigned from the Board of the Commissioners at the Board’s last monthly meeting, as both shared their plans to seek other governmental offices. Sikes has announced his campaign to fulfill the vacancy in the State Senate left by Senator Blake Tillery, who is currently running for Lieutenant Governor; Rollins is seeking election as the County’s Commission Chairman to fill the vacant spot caused by Sikes.
Qualifying for the District 4 County Commission seat, which was formerly held by Rollins, will require a candidate to qualify for the position twice – once to fulfill Rollins’ unexpired term, which ends on December 31, and once for the upcoming term. The May 19 election will determine the successor that completes the unexpired term, while the individual to represent District 4 for the next term will be determined on November 3, during the general election. Qualifying for each race will cost $180.00, bringing the total qualification fee for both races to $360.00 total.
Candidates qualifying for the County Commission Chairman election will pay $540 each, and the term will expire December 31, 2028.
The District 1 seat on the Commission is also up for election, as the position is currently held by Alfred Cason. Qualifying for this position will cost $180.00 per candidate.
The Toombs County Board of Education also has several seats up for election, such as the County Board of Election Chairman, which is currently filled by Chairman Clint Williams. Qualifying for this election will cost $108.00 per candidate. Board of Education District 1, District 3, and District 5 seats are also up for election, as candidates will be required to pay $72.30 in qualifying fees. Three Board of Education seats are up for election and will cost $138.00 per candidate; these seats are currently represented by District 2 Board Member Buddy Hester, District 3 Board Member Alvin Heath, and District 5 Board Member Demetria Noble.
Candidates may qualify for the election in the Treutlen County Board of Elections Office within the Treutlen County Annex, located at 650 Second Street in Soperton. Qualifying is open from 8 a.m. on Monday, March 2, until 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, and 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Friday, March 6.
