The Brewton-Parker Christian University Barons flag football team hosted the Timberwolves of Florida Gateway College on February 18, 2026. Despite their best efforts, the Barons were outclassed and lost 6-35.

Florida Gateway seized control in the first quarter, capitalizing on a Barons’ turnover to open the scoring. Nichelle Brown jumped a route and returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown at the 9:05 mark for a 7-0 lead. Later in the quarter, the Timberwolves’ defense added two more points on a safety, pushing the margin to 9-0 and putting the Barons in an early hole.

Brewton-Parker responded with its best moment of the afternoon when quarterback Se-Anna Johnson connected with D’nAsia Leonard-Potts on a deep strike downfield. Leonard-Potts turned the completion into a 56-yard touchdown reception with 3:20 left in the first quarter, trimming the deficit to 9-6 and giving the Barons needed momentum. The play accounted for nearly half of the Barons’ 125 passing yards and stood as the Barons’ lone scoring drive of the game.

Florida Gateway, however, answered before the quarter ended and never looked back. With just three seconds remaining in the first quarter, Brown struck again, this time as a receiver, hauling in an 18-yard touchdown pass from Katelyn Jewell to make it 16-6. The Timberwolves then extended the lead seconds before halftime when Martha Edwards found Poetry Auguste for a 16-yard touchdown with 19 seconds left in the second quarter, sending the Barons into the break trailing 22-6.

Brewton-Parker’s defense settled in during a scoreless third quarter, forcing Florida Gateway’s only turnover of the contest on a drive that ended with 6:02 left in the frame. The Barons also generated pressure up front, finishing with two sacks, but Florida Gateway’s passing attack eventually broke through again. In the fourth quarter, backup quarterback Emma Clough connected with Layla West on a 21-yard touchdown at the 6:50 mark to push the margin to 29-6. The Timberwolves kept the pressure on and continued to stymie the Barons’ offense before scoring a touchdown with just under 30 seconds left in the game to hit their final total of 35.

Head Coach Sheldon Miller reflected on the game, saying, “We played an elite national-level flag football program today. Today, we saw who we were, and we could not be happier with our defensive play. We gave them different tasks, and they bowed their necks. Offensively, we are still getting our feet under us, but we got better today! We are giving Glory to God in the wins as well as the losses. You grow as a program in the tough ones, and we grew today!”

The Barons will host Milligan University on February 21, 2026, as they look to rally, build on their tough lessons, and get back into the win column to improve their 2-3 record.
