A woman was recently indicted by the Toombs County Grand Jury on a single charge of criminal damage to property in the first degree for the destruction caused in a 2022 car crash in Vidalia.

The Toombs County Grand Jury reconvened for their first session of the new year on January 5, during which they returned 9 true bills of indictment, including one for Trina Marie Conaway for the damages to J & B’s Steakhouse sustained during a car accident on January 7, 2022.

Christopher Morgan was one of the Vidalia Police Department (VPD) investigators who probed the case, as he reported that Conaway – whose name was previously withheld due to medical privacy issues – entered the VPD headquarters in the John Raymond Turner Municipal Complex on First Street around 6:30 p.m. on January 7, 2022, and appeared to be in distress. The subject was screaming for help, and officers attempted to assist her and to determine the nature of her complaint.

He said that Conaway, who was sitting in the front office of the police station, eventually calmed down, but as officers left to make phone calls about the case, she became agitated again and began tearing items from the walls of the station.

Conaway pulled the fire alarm, then ran from the building and was able to reach her car before officers could stop her. She proceeded to back her car into the former Taco Bell building that is located in the Municipal Complex parking lot and across from the police department, then drove forward into J & B’s Steakhouse, which is located in the same parking lot and is adjacent to the police station.

Morgan said the steakhouse received substantial damage, and four individuals were transported to Memorial Health Meadows Hospital for minor injuries.

Conaway is charged with one count of criminal damage to property in the first degree.
