Rollercoaster Week on the Hardwood
The Toombs County High School basketball teams faced a grueling three-game schedule this week, experiencing the highs of a sweep and the heartbreak of overtime. The Bulldogs opened with a pair of victories over Savannah Christian but faced tough opposition later in the week against Savannah Country Day and Dublin. vs. Savannah Christian
Both varsity squads started the week strong with wins against the Savannah Christian Raiders.
In the girls' matchup, the Lady Bulldogs secured a victory fueled by a dominant offensive performance from Arianna Hill, who dropped a game-high 22 points. She was supported by balanced scoring from Natalie Quintero and Taylor Bland, who added 11 points each.
The boys completed the sweep with a 52-40 win, led by Parker Stanley’s 22 points. The Bulldogs had to overcome a slow start after trailing 12-8 at the end of the first period. Toombs rallied to tie the game at 20-20 by halftime before seizing control in the third quarter. A strong defensive effort allowed them to open up a 40-30 lead, which they maintained through the final buzzer. vs. Country Day
The momentum shifted on Friday as both teams fell to the Savannah Country Day Hornets, with the boys suffering a stinging overtime loss.
The Lady Bulldogs struggled to find their rhythm in a 50-36 defeat. Despite the loss, Hill continued her strong play with 14 points, while Bland contributed 13. The boys’ game was a thriller that required extra time. Savannah Country Day held the advantage early, leading 13-12 after the first and extending that lead to 28-19 at the break. Toombs came storming back in the third quarter to cut the deficit to a single point, 40-39. In a tense fourth quarter, the Bulldogs did just enough to knot the score at 4949. However, the tank ran empty in overtime, as the Hornets dominated the extra period to win 57-50. vs. Dublin
Toombs County wrapped up the week splitting games against the Dublin Fighting Irish.
The Lady Bulldogs were unable to bounce back, falling 57-46 to close out their week.
The boys, however, managed to salvage a split for the day in a nailbiter. Toombs held a slim 13-12 lead after the first quarter, but Dublin fought back to tie the game 26-26 at halftime. The Bulldogs reclaimed the momentum in the third, taking a 36-30 lead into the final frame. The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth battle, but Toombs managed to hold on for a thrilling 51-50 victory.
