Lady Vikings Get 1st Win

The Treutlen County High School Vikings basketball teams faced a grueling three-game schedule last week, taking on Wilcox County, Telfair County, and Montgomery County. While the week proved difficult for the boys, the Lady Vikings ended the stretch on a high note with a dramatic comeback victory at home. Treutlen vs. Wilcox Co.

The week began on the road Tuesday against the Patriots of Wilcox County. In the girls' matchup, Wilcox established dominance early, jumping out to a 16-2 lead in the first period. The Lady Patriots continued to push the tempo, holding a 31-11 advantage at halftime and a 41-12 lead after the third. They eventually closed out the game with a 51-19 victory.

The Vikings boys team also faced a tough challenge against the Patriots, suffering a 72-29 loss to open the week.

Girls vs. Telfair Co.

On Friday, the Lady Vikings traveled to McRae to take on the Lady Trojans. Offense was hard to come by for Treutlen as Telfair opened with an 11-3 run in the first quarter and extended that lead to 33-5 by the break. The deficit grew to 48-10 by the end of the third period, resulting in a 54-13 loss for the Lady Vikings. Girls vs.

Montgomery Co. The Vikings returned home Saturday to host the Eagles of Montgomery County, where the Lady Vikings secured their only win of the week in thrilling fashion.

The Lady Eagles controlled the game early, firing off a 9-2 run in the first quarter and using a stifling defense to take a 23-9 lead into halftime. However, momentum shifted in the third quarter as Treutlen began to chip away at the lead, narrowing the gap to 29-26 heading into the final frame.

The comeback was completed in the final minute. The Lady Vikings took their first lead of the game with only 23 seconds remaining by sinking a pair of clutch free throws to go up 39-38. The defense held firm in the final seconds to preserve the 40-38 victory. The win was the first of the season for the Lady Vikings. Boys vs. Montgomery Co.

In the boys' finale, Montgomery County maintained control for much of the contest. The Eagles built a comfortable lead early and held a 66-52 advantage at the end of the third period. The Vikings attempted a late rally, cutting the lead to 70-63 with 1:44 left to play, but Montgomery County managed the clock effectively to secure a 74-68 win.

The Lady Vikings are now 1-11 on the season while the boys are 4-8 and 2-3 in Region play. This week Treutlen was at Hawkinsville on Tuesday after presstime. They will play next at home against the Tigers of Swainsboro on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and then on Saturday will host East Laurens at 5:00 p.m.
