Eagles Split With Treutlen

The Montgomery County High School Eagles traveled to Treutlen County last Saturday for a rivalry showdown against the Vikings. It was a day of mixed results, as the Lady Eagles suffered a heartbreaking late-game loss, while the boys squad secured a solid victory.

Girls vs. Treutlen

The Lady Eagles controlled the tempo for nearly the entire contest, but saw a dominant start slip away in the final moments. Montgomery County came out firing, taking a 9-2 lead by the end of the first period. Their defense stifled the Lady Vikings throughout the first half, extending the advantage to 23-9 by the break.

Momentum shifted in the third quarter as Treutlen County began to chip away at the deficit, narrowing the gap to 29-26 heading into the final frame. The Lady Vikings did not take their first lead until only 23 seconds remained in the game, sinking a pair of free throws to go up 39-38. Treutlen held on to win 40-38.

Boys vs. Treutlen

The boys game saw Montgomery County maintain better control down the stretch. The Eagles built a comfortable lead early and held a 66-52 advantage at the end of the third period.

While the Vikings attempted a late rally, cutting the lead to 70-63 with 1:44 left to play, Montgomery County refused to fold. The Eagles managed the clock and the scoreboard to close out a 74-68 victory.

The Lady Eagles are now 0-14 on the season, and they are 0-5 in Region play. The boys are 5-9 on the year and are 3-2 in the Region. This week the Eagles hosted Claxton on Tuesday after presstime. They will be back in action on Friday at home against Wheeler County at 6:00 p.m. and then will travel to Toombs County on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
