Treutlen County Sheriff Thomas Corbin has announced an official warning to the public about a scam that is currently spreading through the county.
On December 15, the Treutlen County Sheriff’s Office shared that they have been made aware of a scam involving an individual posing as a sheriff’s office employee. This individual has been calling citizens from “private” or “restricted” numbers and identifying himself as “Joseph Ware.” He attempts to verify this false employment by using badge number 3184.
The caller then falsely tells citizens that they have been placed under a contact order due to their failure to appear in Magistrate Court.
“This person does not work for the Treutlen County Sheriff’s Office,” Corbin clarified. “The Sheriff’s Office does not call from private or restricted numbers to notify individuals of warrants, failure to appears, or contact orders. We will never demand payment, personal information, or threaten arrest over the phone.”
He stated that individuals receiving a call like this should refrain from sharing any personal or financial information, hang up immediately, and report the call to the Treutlen County Sheriff’s Department. If someone has questions about their legal status, they should contact the Magistrate Court or Clerk of Court directly through the office’s official phone numbers.
