Soperton City Council Commits SPLOST Monies
During the regular scheduled meeting on December 15, 2025, Soperton City Council voted to pay $27,248 toward the purchase of a new truck for Soperton Treutlen County Fire Department. The county had previously approached the city about splitting the cost of the purchase, and Mayor Koon said in the last council work session meeting that he felt it was the right thing to do as the fire department serves both the county and the city. The truck is a Vermillion Red Ford 150 XL at a cost of $50,333.22. The city’s part will be paid with SPLOST monies already in place.
The council approved a three percent raise for city employees. City Clerk Samantha Richards stated the raise would apply to all city employees as it is an across-the-board cost of living raise.
Citizen Brian Boynton came before the city council to get approval for a business license for the Eight Ball Game Room. The council expressed concerns about security and safety issues at the business, and Boynton pointed out that he had met with Police Chief Scott and assured the council he would abide by the city’s ordinances and laws in running the business. Council approved the license contingent upon the City Clerk confirming the meeting with Chief Scott and Boynton had taken place.
The council adopted the city’s 2026 fiscal year budget. According to City Clerk Richards, the budget is considered a working budget in that there will be some tweaks and adjustments by department heads if necessary. The budget is available for public review, and anyone wishing to do so should contact city hall to schedule a time to look over the budget.
Retiring City Council members Izell Stephens Jr. and Wade Clark terms will officially end December 31 and the council recognized their combined 32 years of service on the council.
Incoming council members Andrew Simons and Kendra Madison-Harswell are to be sworn into the two council seats on January 5, during the council’s next and first meeting of 2026.
