The Toombs County High School bass fishing team moved into 7th place for Anglers of the Year while at Clarks Hill Lake recently.

The TCHS fishing team of AJ Bagby and Lane Bagby weighed in 10.22lbs. to secure a 23rd place finish out of 138 high school fishing teams in the Georgia Bass Nation fishing tournament on Clarks Hill Lake on December 13. This finish moved the Lake Dawgs into 7th place for the Angler of the Year race out of 148 teams competing to win the prize.

Toombs faced tough weather conditions with a severe cold front and high winds. The majority of the high school teams struggled catching fish due to the cold frontal conditions.

“We had to slow way down given the weather conditions. The fish were sluggish, cold and not willing to chase our baits. We only had 8 bites on Derby Day, and we were fortunate to put all 8 fish in the boat. Our key bait was a green pumpkin neko rigged worm. We found a lot of bass in practice, but they were not willing to bite during the tournament due to the conditions,” AJ Bagby said.

Lane Bagby added, “In practice AJ caught a 5.15lb. bass up the lake on a jig, so we went back up there on tourney day, but we didn't get the big fish to bite. We did catch a 3.04 and a 2.42lb fish on the neko rig, but we just couldn’t' get the 5+ to bite. It was a very tough and cold fishing day.”

Their next GHSA tournament is on Lake Seminole in Bainbridge on January 31.
