Busy Week For Wheeler County Basketball

It was a busy and productive week on the hardwood for the Wheeler County High School basketball teams. The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs faced a grueling schedule of 3 games in 5 days, traveling to Dublin and Appling County while sandwiched around a home matchup against Bacon County.

The Wheeler County boys had a perfect week, sweeping all 3 contests to go 3-0. The Lady Bulldogs finished the stretch 1-2, highlighted by a tight victory over Dublin and strong individual scoring performances from Nikita James.

The week opened on the road Tuesday against the Fighting Irish of Dublin. In the girls' game, the Lady Bulldogs found themselves in a battle down the stretch but managed to pull out a thrilling 42-40 victory. Nikita James was the difference- maker for Wheeler, exploding for a team-high 25 points to lead the offense.

In the nightcap, the boys also secured a win against the Fighting Irish. While the game was competitive throughout, the Bulldogs found another gear in the final period. Wheeler pulled away in the fourth quarter to secure a 67-59 victory.

Wheeler vs. Bacon Co.

The teams returned to Alamo on Friday to host the Bacon County Raiders. In the girls' matchup, Nikita James continued her hot streak, posting another solid performance with 23 points. However, the Lady Raiders' offense proved too much to handle, and Bacon County took the win, 66-44.

The boys' game saw Wheeler jump out to a quick 19-11 lead after the first quarter. The Raiders fought back in the second, cutting the Wheeler lead to just two points, 30-28, by halftime. The Bulldogs regrouped during the break and extended their lead to 51-44 in the third quarter before closing out the game for a 68-56 win. Wheeler at Appling Co.

The week concluded on Saturday with a trip to Baxley to face the Appling County Pirates. The Lady Bulldogs struggled early against the Lady Pirates, who jumped out to a commanding 21-6 lead in the first quarter. Wheeler could not recover from the early deficit, falling 56- 29.

The boys' finale was a back-and-forth affair. Wheeler trailed 13-9 after the first quarter but rallied to take a narrow 24-23 lead into halftime. The Pirates responded in the third, reclaiming the lead 40-39 heading into the final stanza. In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs dug deep, executing down the stretch to pull out a hard-fought 52-48 win to complete the weekly sweep.
