Mt. Vernon Garden Club Celebrates Veterans Day

The November meeting of the Mt Vernon Garden Club happened to fall on Veterans Day this year, so it was only fitting that the meeting was opened with a devotional recognizing Veterans and citing John 3:16. Susan Beard pointed out that veterans exemplify love, honor, and sacrifice.
Hostesses for the meeting were Nina Thompson and Becky Mobley. The flowers for November are the chrysanthemum, which symbolizes love, happiness and joy, and the peony, which symbolizes happiness, romance and good fortune.
Following the buffet luncheon with turkey and all the trimmings, guest speaker Heather Nicole Scott was introduced. She has served as Montgomery County Manager since July 26, 2024, right before Hurricane Helene devastated our county. Mrs. Scott comes to us from her position as County Administrator for the Jeff Davis Board of Commissioners in Hazlehurst. She touched on topics such as the work the Corps of Engineers accomplished in our county, following Hurricane Helene. The work the Corps did, cleaning up debris, did not cost the county anything and the county owes no money because of it. She also discussed the cost per mile to pave Old River Rd and the improvements being done at the recreation department. Several other subjects were discussed as the floor was opened up to members' questions.
A business meeting followed with various committees giving their reports. The next meeting will be the Christmas luncheon where each member will bring a dish and a gift to play 'dirty Santa.' That will be on December 9.

WELCOMING THE COUNTY MANAGER – Mt. Vernon Garden Club members welcomed Montgomery County Manager Heather Scott at their recent meeting. Scott spoke to the Club about various work within the County.
