Vikings Fall To Red Devils
The Treutlen County High School Vikings football team fell to the Red Devils of Hawkinsville last Friday night in Soperton, dropping the hard-fought battle by a final score of 22-10.
The game was a defensive slugfest for much of the first half, with both teams struggling to put points on the board. The Vikings were the first to strike early in the second quarter when Leo Brinson connected on a 32yard field goal, putting Treutlen up 3-0 with about 10 minutes left before halftime.
However, Hawkinsville quickly answered on the ensuing possession. The Red Devils capitalized on good field position when they broke free for a 33-yard rushing touchdown. Hawkinsville missed the extra point, giving them a narrow 6-3 lead, which they carried into the halftime break.
The second half continued to see the Red Devils inch away. Hawkinsville's offense put up another field goal mid-way through the third quarter, extending their lead to 9-3. Later in the third, the Red Devils punched in another rushing touchdown, though the two-point conversion failed, leaving the score 15-3 heading into the final quarter.
The Vikings fought back in the fourth quarter, showing grit and determination. With approximately 6 minutes left in the game, Zaniel Stokes found the end zone on a 9-yard rushing touchdown. Brinson nailed the extra point, bringing the Vikings within striking distance at 15-10.
Unfortunately for the Vikings, Hawkinsville was able to control the clock and put the game out of reach in the final moments. The Red Devils scored a third rushing touchdown, followed by a successful point-after attempt, sealing the victory with the 22-10 final score.
This week the Vikings will take on rival Wheeler County on the road in Alamo at 7:30 p.m. with the Region Championship on the line.
