The Altamaha Down Syndrome Society will celebrate the end of Down Syndrome Awareness Month with a Day of Play event from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, at Ryals Clubhouse, located at 1449 Hatch Parkway in Baxley. Down Syndrome Awareness Month is observed each year during October throughout the nation, as advocates seek the educate the public about the truth regarding the genetic differentiation, and advocate for acceptance and inclusion of individuals with Down Syndrome within communities.

“Down Syndrome Awareness Month is a special time when we’re really able to help other in the community understand what Down Syndrome is and how it may effect people. We work hard to make sure that everyone knows that Down Syndrome is not a disease or something negative, but rather just one of the ways that God made us each unique,” Altamaha Down Syndrome Society Director Makaylee Randolph explained.

The Altamaha Down Syndrome Society will conclude this month of awareness and advocacy with a free event for children with special needs and their families and friends. This event will allow both children and adults to play on an inclusive playground, which allows adults and children to climb multiple levels of a playset, climb over things, and slide alongside those that they love.

“Ryals Clubhouse has really become a place of inclusion and acceptance in the region, so it was only fitting that we celebrate such a special month there,” Randolph added. “It’s somewhere that everyone can enjoy – children and adults alike.”

Attendees must wear or bring socks, as all individuals – both children and adults – will be required to remove their shoes For more information, call or text Randolph at (912) 253-1447.
