Students in Mr. and Mrs. Hammons' 5th-grade class at Wheeler County Elementary School are off to a terrific start this school year, already digging into some fascinating topics in science and social studies. The classroom is buzzing with curiosity as the young learners embark on a journey to understand how the world around them is organized.

In science, the current focus is on the classification of living things. The students are learning that all animals can be sorted into major categories based on their physical characteristics. A key distinction they've been exploring is the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates. Vertebrates, such as fish, birds, and mammals, are animals with a backbone. In contrast, invertebrates, including insects and arachnids, are animals that lack a backbone. The students have been engaged in hands-on activities, using charts, diagrams, and examples to identify which category different animals fall into.

Mr. and Mrs. Hammons are delighted with their class. 'This group of students is incredibly enthusiastic and eager to learn,' said Mrs. Hammons. 'Their questions show a real depth of thinking, and it's wonderful to see them make connections between what they're learning and the world outside the classroom.'

The teachers are also excited about the upcoming topics and the progress the students are making. 'We're looking forward to an amazing year,' added Mr. Hammons. 'If this is how we're starting, we can only imagine what we'll accomplish together by the end of the year.'
