GRAND CHAMPION MARKET HOG WINNER LUKE BURNS

On Saturday, September 27, Wheeler, Laurens, Treutlen, and Montgomery Counties came together to have the Three Rivers Hog Show, where sixteen students competed to help prepare for the hog show at the Georgia National Fair in Perry in two weeks.

The competition began with the showmanship class, where Lawton Thompson won Pee Wee Showmanship Class, and Tanner Posey took home the title of Champion Novice Showman. Landon Burns won the Junior Showmanship Class. In the Intermediate Class, Bryston Claxton earned first. MaKalyn Claxton was named the Senior Showmanship Champion.

Showmanship was followed by the Breeding Gilt Show. Alice Braddy won the Duroc Breeding Gilt Class with her March Duroc. Eliza Bateson, while her March York won Class 2. Bryson Claxton’s Berkshire won Class 3, and MaKalyn Claxton took first place in the Commercial Gilt Class. MaKalyn went on to win Grand Champion Breeding Gilt, and Eliza Bateson took home the prize of Reserve Champion Breeding Gilt.

There were six classes of market hogs, ranging from 185 pounds to 253 pounds. Remi Bateson won Class 1- Purebred Barrows with her 235-lb Yorkshire, John Braddy was the firstplace winner of Class 2Purebred Barrows with his 268-lb Duroc, and MaKalyn Claxton won first place in Class 3 with her 196-lb gilt. In Class 4, Landon Burns won with his 203-lb barrow. Luke Burns placed first with his 218-lb gilt in class 5, and he also won Class 6 with his 233-lb barrow. Luke went on to win Grand Champion Market Hog, while his brother, Landon Burns, followed as Reserve Champion Market Hog.

Other showman participating in this show were Caleb Braddy, Anna Beth Ethredge, Zoey and Layla Vann, Regan Parker, Hattie Claire Sconyers, Fletcher Baeson, Charlie Kate Cutler, and Emerson Garner.

We would like to thank everyone who came out to support our Three Rivers Hog Show. We believe these livestock projects teach students responsibility and record keeping skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. A special thanks goes to Gary Childs of Pelham for judging our show. Congratulations to all showmen, and good luck in Perry.
