Wheeler Girls Take 2 Games

The Wheeler County High School softball team played two games last week as they beat Hawkinsville in a Region matchup and then won a nonregion contest over East Laurens. vs. Hawkinsville

The Lady Bulldogs held off a late charge by the Lady Red Devils of Hawkinsville to secure a 6-4 victory on Tuesday.

Pitcher Ava Dixon was dominant on the mound for the Lady Bulldogs, striking out 10 batters en route to the win. Dixon surrendered 1 hit and 3 runs, walking 2 over 5 1/3 innings. Wheeler scored one run in each of the first 4 innings of the game as they built up a 4-0 lead over Hawkinsville. Wheeler added 2 more runs in the top of the sixth inning to push the lead to 6-0.

Hawkinsville plated 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 6-3, and they added 1 more in the seventh, but Wheeler held on to take the win, 6-4. vs. E. Laurens

Wheeler won another close game as they defeated the Lady Flacons of East Laurens. The Falcons took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the third inning, but Wheeler answered with 2 in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.

East Laurens plated 1 more in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2, but Wheeler came through with a run in the top of the seventh inning, and then held in the bottom half of the frame to take the 3-2 win over the Falcons.

Wheeler improves their record to 15-6 on the season and they are 7-2 in Region play. This week they played FPCA on Tuesday after presstime. They will host Vidalia on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. They will wrap up the regular season next week with a double header against Clinch County and a rematch with Hawkinsville.
