Lady Indians Collect 2 More Wins
The Vidalia High School Lady Indians softball team played three games last week. They won a Region game on Tuesday at home over Swainsboro, and then won a nonregion game over the Academy for Classical Education on the road on Wednesday, but they fell in a Region contest to rival Toombs County in Lyons on Thursday. It was the first Region loss of the season for the Indians who are no 14-11 overall and 6-1 in Region action. vs. Swainsboro
A dominating performance from freshman pitcher Tori Polke led the Vidalia High School Lady Indians varsity softball team to a 4-0 shutout victory over the Swainsboro Lady Tigers on Tuesday, September 23.
The Lady Indians' offense gave Polke all the run support she would need early, opening the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with 3 singles. Polke herself drove in the first run, singling to score a runner. VHS added 2 more runs off of RBI hits from Paisley Ledford and Deidra Boston in the inning to take a 3-0 lead over Swainsboro.
Vidalia then pushed the lead to 4-0 in the second inning when Polke came through again, doubling to center field to bring in another run. Neither team scored over the remainder of the game as Vidalia took the win, 4-0.
The Vidalia defense backed up Polke's pitching gem by turning 1 double play in the contest, and committing just 1 error. vs. ACE
The Vidalia Lady Indians faced a mid-game scare but rallied for 5 runs in the final inning to defeat the Lady Gryphons of the Academy for Classical Education (ACE), 11-6, on Wednesday, September 24.
The Lady Indians started strong, plating a run in the top of the first inning on a hit by Sadie Berry. ACE tied the game in the bottom of the frame, but VHS jumped back in front in the top of the second inning.
VHS exploded for 4 more in the second to take a 5-1 lead. The second-inning rally featured an RBI triple by Ivy Berry, a sacrifice fly from Elizabeth Sowell, a home run to center field by Tori Polke, and an RBI single by Paisley Ledford.
ACE refused to back down, mounting a major comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Lady Gryphons scored 5 runs on 4 hits, highlighted by a 3-run single, to flip the score and take a slim 6-5 lead.
VHS tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the sixth inning when Vidalia's Deidra Boston answered the call by crushing a home run to center field..
The Lady Indians broke the deadlock in the seventh inning, with Polke and Ledford delivering RBI doubles to drive in runs and power a five-run surge that put Vidalia up 11-6.
On the mound, relief pitcher Aubrey Jones earned the win for the Lady Indians. Jones was stellar in relief, throwing 3 1/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing 0 hits, striking out 4, and walking 2. Starter Anastyn Blewett went 3 2/3, allowing 6 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits.
Offensively, Tori Polke finished with a huge day at the plate, collecting 3 hits—a single, a double, and a home run—in 5 atbats. Deidra Boston led the team with a phenomenal 4-for-4 performance. Polke and Ledford each drove in 3 runs for the Lady Indians, who amassed 13 hits in the victory. vs. Toombs
The Lady Indians suffered their first Region loss of the season in a hard-fought rivalry game against the Toombs County Lady Bulldogs, falling 9-6 on Thursday, September 25.
The Lady Bulldogs took a commanding early lead in the bottom of the first inning as they scored 5 runs. Toombs added another run in the second inning to lead, 6-0.
The Lady Indians fought their way back into the game, tying the score in the top of the fourth inning. The six-run rally was powered by a single from Paisley Ledford, a sacrifice fly by Sadie Berry, an error, and a single by Elizabeth Sowell.
However, the Lady Bulldogs reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth as they drove in a run to take a 7-6 lead. Toombs added 2 more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on the way to a 9-6 win over Vidalia.
This week VHS will be at Wheeler County on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and then will be at Emanuel County Institute on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. Next week is the final week of the regular season and the Indians will face off with Jeff Davis on Monday, Savannah Christian on Tuesday, and will wrap things up against Swainsboro on Thursday.
