Historic Farmers Home Furniture in Soperton to Rebuild

Groundbreaking ceremonies were held Tuesday, September 23, for the rebuilding of Soperton’s Farmers Home Furniture one year after Hurricane Helene completely destroyed the store. The historic location was the company's first store, opening in 1949 when 22-year-old Sherwin Glass began selling used furniture from the back of his truck to area farmers and their families in and around the Soperton area. Glass began with an inventory of $1,100 worth of used furniture, and, using the name Farmers’ Furniture, built the business into a multi-million dollar enterprise selling furniture and appliances throughout the Southeast through more than 200 stores.
Soperton store Manager Jeff Rogers says he is very thankful Farmers' corporate decided to rebuild and stated, “The new store is expected to open within 6 to 8 months, but I’m actually hoping for early summer.”
