Lyons City Council Race Contested

Editor’s Note: Due to an accidental oversight in paperwork in the Toombs County Elections Office, Lyons City Council Ward 1 Candidate Larry Michael Griggers was incorrectly reported as “Larry Michael.”

Qualifying was held recently for the municipal elections in Lyons, Santa Claus, and Vidalia; yet, only Lyons had contested races, as six candidates are seeking three seats on the Lyons City Council.

The seats for Ward 1, 2, and 4 are up for reelection in Lyons, and three citizens have thrown their names in the hat against current city council members. Ward 1 City Councilman Tracy Johnson is opposed by former Ward 1 City Councilman Larry Michael Griggers and James Shell, while Ward 2 City Councilwoman Cathy Benton faces off again with former City Councilwoman Sonya Eason. Ward 4 Councilman John Moore Jr. qualified unopposed.

In Santa Claus, Renee Wright and William Powell are seeking election for the City Council Post 1 and 3 seats. They are unopposed.

The following Vidalia candidates also all qualified for reelection unopposed: Mayor Doug Roper III, Ward 1 Councilman Cecil Thompson, Ward 2 Councilwoman Jennifer Evans, Ward 2 School Board Member Sadia Ajohda, and Ward 4 School Board Member Fred Godbee.

The municipal election will be held on Tuesday, November 4, in conjunction with the Public Service Commissioner election. Early voting will be held October 14 through October 31.
