Busy Week For Lady Eagles
It was a busy week for the Montgomery County High School Lady Eagles softball team as they played five games last week. The Lady Eagles also picked up three wins to improve their record to 4-12 overall and 1-5 in the Region.
They started the week with a loss to Atkinson County at home on Tuesday but bounced back with two wins in a double header against McIntosh County Academy on Wednesday at home. The Lady Eagles then split a Region double header with Hawksinville on Thursday on the road. vs. Atkinson Co.
The Lady Eagles started the week with a 15-2 loss to Atkinson County at home on Tuesday. The visiting team jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning. Atkinson added one run in the second and then six more in the third inning to take a commanding 11-0 lead. They added four more runs in the top of the fourth inning to push the lead to 15-0 Montgomery County managed to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but that was all they could get in the 15-2 loss. vs. McIntosh Co. Aca. Game 1 On Wednesday, the Lady Eagles bounced back with an 11-6 win in the first game of the double header. MCHS got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning on a hit by Alexis Reaves. MCA came back with two runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead, 2-1, but the Eagles answered in the bottom of the frame with two more runs on a double by Reaves and a double by Makayla Moore to take a 3-2 lead. The Lady Buccaneers of McIntosh added two runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead back, but MCHS again answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to lead, 5-4. Two more from MCA in the fifth gave them the lead, 6-5.
MCHS rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out the win. With RBIs from Sicily Thornton, Alexis Reaves, Trinity Wideman, Billie Ford, and Riley White, the Eagles plated six runs to jump out to an 11-6 lead. MCHS held in the top of the seventh inning to take the win.
Game 2
In the second game of the double header the Lady Eagles had to battle to pull out the victory in the bottom of the seventh inning. McIntosh took the early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the second inning with the bases loaded, Sicily Thornton walked to bring in the first run for the Eagles, and then an RBI hit from Alexis Reaves drove in two runs to put MCHS on top, 3-2. The Eagles added one more run in the inning on a sacrifice fly for a 4-2 lead.
MCHS closed the lead to 4-3 in the top of the third inning and then tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth inning. The Bucs took the lead with four more runs in the sixth inning, going on top, 8-4.
MCHS came back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it an 8-7 game heading into the seventh inning. McIntosh plated three more runs in the seventh to take an 11-7 lead. But in the bottom of the seventh the Eagles rallied for five runs to take the win, 12-11. A couple of big errors by McIntosh allowed the first couple of runs to score and then an RBI single from Nora Cartwright closed the lead to 11-10. A sacrifice fly tied the game at 11-11, and a big walk off RBI single by Sicily Thornton gave the Lady Eagles the win. vs. Hawksinville Game 1 The Lady Eagles then split a Region doubleheader with Hawksinville on Thursday on the road. In the first game, they pulled off a narrow 5-4 victory.
The Lady Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout from Alexis Reaves. Hawkinsville’s Lady Red Devils jumped back in front in the second inning with two more runs and then added another in the third inning to lead, 4-2.
The Eagles tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth when Makayla Moore hit an inside-the-park home run. MCHS pulled out the win in the bottom of the seventh inning as they plated a run to take the win, 5-4.
Game 2
The second game resulted in an 8-3 loss for the Lady Eagles. Montgomery County took an early 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning on RBIs from Alexis Reaves and Grace Richardson. However, Hawksinville came back strong, scoring six runs on five hits in the bottom of the third to take the lead, 6-3.
The Devils added a run in the fifth and another in the sixth on the way to the 8-3 win.
This week MCHS hosted Swainsboro on Monday and Wilcox County on Tuesday, both after presstime. They will be back in action on Thursday at Telfair County at 5:30 p.m.
