Toombs Takes Home Win After Lightning Halts Game
The Toombs County High School Bulldogs football team secured a 12-6 victory over the Dougherty Trojans on Friday night in a game cut short by lightning. The contest, which was shaping up to be a fierce backand- forth battle, was called off by Dougherty after the weather delay, granting the Bulldogs a win on the road. First-Quarter Slugfest
The game started with the Trojans striking first. About five minutes into the first quarter, Dougherty connected on a 36-yard passing touchdown to take an early 6-0 lead. The Bulldogs' defense, however, held strong, as Dougherty's point-after attempt was unsuccessful.
Toombs County responded with an impressive drive late in the quarter. With less than a minute remaining, running back Justin Powell broke free for a 28-yard rushing touchdown, knotting the score at 6-6. Just like their opponents, the Bulldogs also missed their pointafter attempt, leaving the game tied heading into the second quarter.
Bulldogs Pull Ahead Before the Storm The Bulldogs wasted no time in the second quarter, making a major special teams play. Around the 11-minute mark, Alex Scott fielded a punt and turned on the jets, returning it for a 75yard touchdown. The incredible play gave Toombs County a 12-6 lead.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs missed the point-after attempt, keeping the score at 12-6. Moments later, the game was put on hold due to a lightning delay. After an extended wait, Dougherty officials decided not to resume play, handing Toombs County the victory.
The win moves the Bulldogs to a 2-0 record on the season. Toombs County is set to return to the field this Friday when they host South Effingham in The Pit, with kickoff at 8:00 p.m.
