Lady Bulldogs Win Over Statesboro
The Wheeler County High School Lady Bulldogs softball team had a busy and competitive week, showcasing a mix of grit and determination in their two completed games. They faced a tough loss to Treutlen County High School on Monday before securing a hard-fought victory against Statesboro High School on Tuesday. The Lady Bulldogs fell to the Treutlen Varsity Vikings 6-3 on Monday, despite a strong offensive performance. WCHS Dawgs out-hit their opponents four to one. Rozilynn Cox led the team with two hits.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard early in the top of the first with a bold steal of home by Shiann Carey. The Vikings answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-1 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs battled back and took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning after two runs scored on a Treutlen error. However, the Vikings responded in the bottom of the sixth, making the score 6-3. Wheeler could not get anything across in the top of the seventh inning as they fell, 6-3. vs. Statesboro
The Lady Bulldogs rebounded with a 5-3 victory over the Statesboro Blue Devils on Tuesday. Ava Dixon was dominant on the mound, striking out 10 batters in WCHS's win. She surrendered just three hits and two runs over five innings while walking two.
Wheeler took the early lead with a run in the top of the third inning on a ball hit by Ava Dixon, but Statesboro tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single. Wheeler answered in the top of the fifth inning with two more runs to take a 3-1 lead, but Statesboro tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth inning.
The Lady Bulldogs took the lead for good in the top of the seventh after Kaitlyn Conner singled down the left field line and Ava Dixon hit a sacrifice fly. That put Wheeler on top, 5-3.
Offensively, the bottom of the lineup was crucial to the win, with Kaleigh Scott, Anna Ethredge, and Laurie Conner combining for four of the team's eight hits. In addition to her pitching heroics, Ava Dixon led the team with two runs batted in and went 1-for-3 on the day. Kaitlyn Conner, Kaleigh Scott, and Laurie Conner each collected two hits. The team also turned one double play in the game. vs. Hawkinsville
The Lady Bulldogs' week ended on a disappointing note as their game against Hawkinsville was called in the third inning due to weather. Wheeler was trailing 9-0 at the time the game was stopped.
This week Wheeler was at Telfair County on Tuesday after press time. They will be back in action on Wednesday at Dodge County at 5:30 p.m., and then will be at Montgomery County on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
