Offense: New Faces, High Hopes
The Vikings' offense will be led by senior quarterback Kavion Peeples, who saw limited action last season but is poised to make a significant impact this year. The backfield features junior Deverin Knowles at wing, junior Za’Kian Tobler at fullback, and Peyton Miller stepping into the halfback role. Tobler has impressed with his offseason gains in strength and speed. Miller, tasked with replacing 1,000-yard rusher Rob Fuller, is 'coming along well' and developing his vision, with hopes he'll become a big-play threat.
At tight end, Tyrone Jones provides a solid blocking presence with reliable hands. The receiving corps looks promising with junior Zaniel Stokes (6’3”) expected to make big plays thanks to his size and ball skills. Keep an eye on newcomer Sammy Smith, a towering 6’5” target who is quickly learning the ropes.
The offensive line, though smaller this year, boasts speed and good footwork. Returning starter Tegan Phillips anchors the line at center, flanked by Carter Roberson at right guard and Tyler Gillis at right tackle. Sophomore Lucas Briggs steps in as a first-time starter at left guard, while senior Charvis Givens, a three-year starter with college offers, provides veteran leadership at left tackle.
Defense: Speed and Experience Up Front On the defensive side, the Vikings will look to a trio of strong players to clog up the middle. Johnny Johnson transitions from linebacker to nose guard, bringing his playmaking ability to the defensive line. Seniors Tyrone Jones and Charvis Givens will man the defensive end positions, providing an experienced and disruptive presence. The linebacking corps is headlined by junior Caleb Powell, who has made remarkable strides in the offseason and earned the starting middle linebacker spot. He’ll be joined by Za’Kian Tobler and Deverin Knowles, both known for their speed and run-stopping prowess. Sophomore Chris Meza-Avila will also see time, providing depth.
At outside linebacker, sophomore Chayden Johnson has impressed Coach Shurling with his high football IQ and is expected to be a key starter despite still filling out his frame. Junior Zaniel Stokes will also play outside linebacker, bringing his coverage skills to the forefront.
In the secondary, Zion Brown and Markel Hamilton provide speed and strong pass coverage at cornerback. Senior Kavion Peeples will pull double duty, anchoring the defense at safety, where his all-around solid play ensures he's on the field as much as possible.
Vikings Special Teams Outlook The Vikings' special teams unit will rely on Leo Brinson as their primary kicker this season, handling place-kicking duties for extra points, field goals, and kickoffs. Providing the crucial long snaps for Treutlen will be a shared responsibility between Za’Kian Tobler and Charvis Givens, ensuring smooth operations for both punts and kicks.
A Challenging Road Ahead The Vikings acknowledge the formidable challenge of their region, which saw multiple opponents advance beyond the continued from page
first round of the playoffs last season. Treutlen will kick off the season with four nonregion contests before diving into region play against Wilcox County. Marquee rivalry matchups include a home game against Montgomery County on October 10 and a road trip to face Wheeler County in Alamo on October 31.
Community Rallies Behind the Vikings The support system for the Vikings is stronger than ever. New Principal Josh White and Athletic Director Andrew Johnson have been instrumental in enhancing the game-day experience and providing unwavering support for the team. Coach Shurling also lauded the 'Iron Viking Club' and various community groups and churches for their generous donations and meals.
'Having that support, these kids see that,' Shurling emphasized. 'Our players are really trying to change the culture around here. Our seniors have really stepped up, and they are starting to believe in it. They want to leave a legacy, and they are working towards it. I’ve just been impressed with their attitudes, and I am proud of them for all of the effort they have given us.' With renewed focus, a dedicated coaching staff, and a roster committed to changing the narrative, the Treutlen County Vikings are ready to prove that the past few seasons were just a prelude to something special. The goal is clear: make the playoffs and build a lasting legacy.
