Power Outages Hit Vidalia

Citizens of Vidalia have experienced two short power outages within the past week, as a fire and wreck caused many customers to lose electricity.
On Friday night, July 25, a fire broke out at the power substation beside Woody Folsom Chrystler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership along U.S. Highway 280. Many Georgia Power customers on the eastern side of the city were left in the dark. Although emergency personnel responded, the blaze could not be extinguished until an adjacent substation’s connecting power source was turned off.
Once the fire was contained, Georgia Power began restoring power to the area, and all meters were back within hours.
Then, on Sunday night, July 27, a vehicle wrecked near Adams Street in Vidalia, breaking two power poles in the process. A total of 350 customers were left without power. Once the crash scene was cleared, Altamaha EMC workers began installing two replacement poles, which each took around 4 hours to complete. Power was completely restored by 3 a.m. on Monday morning, July 28.
