To avoid being scammed by this fake cash, businesses should look for “MOTION PICTURE PURPOSE” or “COPY” printed on the bill in place of standard text. Also, the texture of the counterfeit bills will often feel smoother and thinner than actual cash. The ink and coloration of the counterfeit bills may vary from that of legitimate money, and often, these fake bills are missing key features, like security threads, watermarks, and color-shifting ink.

The Department advises business owners and employees to protect their businesses by being vigilant in looking for these signs of counterfeit, and to make others aware of the scam.
