Low Turnout for PSC Election

Very few voters went to the polls to cast their ballots on their picks to represent each political party in the District 2 and District 3 Georgia Professional Standards Commission election, as most local counties had less than 5% of their total voters participate.

This year’s PSC election marks the first election since 2020, as District 2 PSC Commissioner Tim Echols and District 3 Commissioner Fitz Johnson have served extended terms on the commission because of a pending lawsuit regarding the practice of electing delegates to the commission. After the case was solved earlier this year, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger issued an official call for an election on February 19, as he declared that the primary election would be held on June 17, and the general election would be held later in November.

The General Assembly further solidified this plan of electing delegates to the Commission, as they passed a bill authorizing the election to be held this year for Districts 2 and 3, while the District 5 election will be held in 2026 and the Districts 1 and 4 elections will be held in 2028.

In Montgomery County, 122 voters — only 2% of the county’s 5,981 registered voters — cast their ballot. In Toombs County, only 554 voters – 3% of the County’s 16,678 registered voters – went to the polls. A total of 69 voters cast their ballots in Treutlen County.

Wheeler County had 55% of their registered voters –a total of 1,826 voters – who cast their ballots in the election. However, many only voted on the countywide Tax Commissioner special election, as only 647 of these voters cast a ballot regarding the PSC.

Statewide, in the race for the District 2 Republican Candidacy, Tim Echols (incumbent) took 75.76%, receiving 47,986 votes, while Lee Muns took 24.24%, totaling 15,354 votes. Echols will now face District 2 Democratic Candidate Alicia M. Johnson, who ran unopposed and received 125,726 total votes.

District 3 Republican Candidate Fitz Johnson (incumbent) ran unopposed, and received 54,640 votes. The race for the District 3 Democratic Candidacy will now go to a runoff election, as Keisha Sean Waites received 58,021 votes (46.06%); Peter Hubbard received 41,911 votes (33.27%); and Robert Jones received 26,036 votes (20.67%).

Waites and Hubbard will now face off for the candidacy on Tuesday, July 15. The winner of the election will face Republican Candidate Johnson in the general election on Tuesday, November 4. Early voting will be held from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily on Monday, July 7, through Friday, July 11.
