18th Annual Independence Day Celebration in Alamo on June 28

The Alamo Volunteer Fire Department is preparing to stage its 18th annual Fourth of July Celebration. As is customary, the event is scheduled for the weekend prior to the national holiday, so the fireworks will be breaking across Alamo’s skies on June 28.

The festivities begin at 2 p.m. as vendors and attractions line the park along Main Street in downtown Alamo. Event coordinator Sheilia Chaney said everything from funnel cakes to hot wings will be available for hungry festival- goers, and vendors will be selling a variety of wares including customized hats and tees, woodcrafts, candles and jewelry.

Children can enjoy activities ranging from a bouncy house to a ride aboard the “Jay Bird Express,” and a display of antique tractors at the city park is a great place to stage a few photos.

Entertainment begins on stage at 5 p.m. and will feature a variety of gospel, Southern rock and country tunes. Headlining the musical performances this year is the band “Rolling Thunder.” Local talent will include singer Jay Ashley.

The fireworks begin at 9 p.m. Each year the crowds drawn to Alamo for the holiday spectacle increase, with folks setting up lawn chairs and piling into the beds of pickup trucks along Railroad Avenue to view the show.

“People come from all over the area and even from outside the state — from places like Macon, Atlanta, and Florida,” Chaney said. “We think this is one of the best fireworks displays in the state.”

Admission to the event is free and everyone is welcome. Proceeds derived from vendors’ fees benefit the Alamo Volunteer Fire Department by funding the purchase of service equipment and other needs.

Visitors are also invited to visit the Little Ocmulgee State Park in Wheeler County just 10 miles from Alamo via U.S. Highway 280 and U.S. Highway 441 where a number of activities are offered, including camping, hiking, picnicking, canoeing, fishing, playgrounds, as well as a lodge and restaurant.

For more information, or to participate as a vendor, call Chaney at 912-568-7147 or 912-4230212.
