Camp Grow Kicks Off in Wheeler County

Camp Grow launched in Wheeler County on Monday, June 9. The program is an outgrowth of the nonprofit Gents and Glam Community Family and Youth Services, Inc., a youth leadership and mentoring program based in Baxley, whose director is Santina Fryer.
Camp Grow provides wholesome opportunities for children who live in a rural area where organized summer activities are scarce, Fryer said. The Wheeler program continues Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., through July 30 and offers activities for any child aged 5 to 13. The program is housed in the old elementary school gymnasium on Commerce Street.
Fryer said children who attend the program will receive breakfast and lunch, along with an agenda of stimulating activities that include academic enrichment, athletic games, field trips, arts and crafts, and more. A special feature of the camp is presentations by guest speakers on various topics like health and safety, wildlife, and careers.
The program cost is $55 per week, and some participants may be eligible for assistance. To join up, visit the camp and apply at the front desk. Gwana Lewis is the local director.
