CELEBRATING EASTER – The Mt. Vernon Garden Club celebrated Easter during their meeting on April 8.

The Mt. Vernon Garden Club celebrated Easter and learned about the history of barbarians from Brewton-Parker College Associate Professor of History Timothy Miller at their meeting on April 8.

As Mt. Vernon Garden Club Members entered the Garden Room at the Student Center of Brewton-Parker College on April 8, they were greeted with Spring flowers, Easter eggs and Easter bunnies. It was evident that Easter was on the way.

Club President Linda Page opened the meeting and after the devotion, club members who had birthdays in April were recognized. The birth flowers for April are the daisy and the sweet pea. The daisy represents innocence and new beginnings.

Hostesses for the month were Kirstin Brown and Susan Beard.

Following the buffet luncheon, guest speaker Timothy Miller was introduced. Miller is originally from Dallas, GA, but has lived in 4 states and 3 countries. He earned his Doctorate degree in History from Oxford University. He is Associate Professor of History at Brewton-Parker College.

Miller presented a program about the history of barbarians, who were primarily of German origin but invaded and settled in various parts of Europe. Many of them settled in Scandinavia. Much of this happened during the decline of the Western Roman Empire. Barbarians were usually large men with red hair and blue eyes.

The women did most of the work. Also of note was the fact that 6 days of the week were named after barbarian (Norse) gods.

A thank you gift of red gerbera daisies was presented to Miller for graciously accepting an invitation to share his knowledge of history with club members.

A business meeting followed and several members volunteered to form a scholarship committee. Also, club members signed up to staff the ticket booths at the gates at the Vidalia Onion Arts and Crafts Festival. In May, there will be no meeting and club members will be traveling to the County Plant Farm in Baxley.
