Lady Eagles Win Region Title

The Montgomery County High School Lady Eagles basketball team are the Region Champions. They accomplished the next goal they had on the list for the season and now will move into the State Playoffs with their sights set on the ultimate goal of the season. The MCHS boys came out of the Region Tournament with fourth place and will also be moving on to the State Playoffs.

The boys won a play-in game over Emanuel County Institute, but lost the next two games to Portal and Jenkins County. The Lady Eagles played two games. In the first, they rolled over ECI, and then won by 19 over Portal in the Championship Game.

Boys vs. ECI

The MCHS boys won their game on Tuesday over ECI going away. MCHS jumped out to an early lead and went on to take the win, 71-39. With the win, they secured a spot in the State Playoffs.

Boys vs. Portal

MCHS struggled against the Panthers of Portal on Thursday. Portal took a 26-12 lead by the end of the first quarter and pushed that lead to 48-31 by the end of the first half of action.

In the third quarter, Portal went on a run and were on top 82-43 heading to the fourth quarter. Portal took the win, 95-51 over the Eagles.

Girls vs. ECI

MCHS broke the game open in the first quarter. Amire Banks and Marley Bell were in control from the start. MCHS led 13-2 with 3:20 left in the first, and then a series of steals from Banks and Bell pushed the lead to 20-6 with two minutes left in the first. Banks hit a three, and then Bell added one as MCHS led 29-8 by the end of the first quarter.

second, but by halftime they held a 40-12 lead over the Lady Bulldogs of ECI.

MCHS continued to extend the lead in the third as they outscored the Bulldogs 25-17. That gave them a 65-29 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

MCHS went on to win the game 80-34 to move into the Region Championship. MCHS was led by Banks with 22 points, Bell added 20, Trinity Wideman scored 9, and Erin Adams added 8 in the win.

Boys vs. Jenkins

MCHS played hard but could not keep up with the War Eagles of Jenkins in the end. Jenkins pulled ahead and took the win over MCHS, 70- 51.

Girls vs. Portal

The game was close early with the Lady Eagles on top 14-11 at the end of the first quarter. In the second, MCHS was able to add to their lead, and by halftime the Lady Eagles led the Lady Panthers, 28- 19.

Portal kept pace with MCHS in the third quarter to send the game to the fourth with the Eagles on top 40-31. But in the fourth, MCHS pulled away as they took the win over Portal, 61-42.

MCHS was led by Bell with 35 points, Wideman posted 9, and Adams scored 8 in the win.

This week the Lady Eagles hosted Charlton County on Tuesday after presstime, and if they win, that game they will play later in the week against the winner of the Treutlen vs. Early County game. The boys will play on Wednesday at Lanier County at 6:00 p.m. If they win that, they will play later in the week against the winner of the Wheeler County vs. Calhoun County game.
