In 1973, the Vidalia Recreation Department's Midget Varsity (12 and under) football team won the GRPS State Championship on Charles Wood Memorial Field.

Fifty years later, the former players, coaches, and cheerleaders held a reunion on January 14, 2023, at the Dixon Building on the VRD campus. They enjoyed seeing old friends, looking at newspaper articles/pictures from the 1970s, and watching a video of a key game in the championship season.

The former players and cheerleaders took time to share their own memories of the 'recreation department' days and how much the coaches and staff had impacted their lives. Former VRD Director Ed Smith, Assistant VRD Director Garry Adams, and Sports Program Director Bill James spoke to the group about how the staff always worked as a team to make the department successful for the community and its citizens.
