Vidalia City Schools has partnered with Memorial Health Meadows Hospital to ensure that all babies get an early start on literacy through resources purchased with funding from the Georgia Department of Education L4GA grant (Literacy for Learning, Living, and Leading) grant earlier this year.

These resources, which have been titled “Bundles of Joy,” are given to expectant mothers or new mothers leaving the hospital with their babies. Assistant Superintendent Ginger Morris spoke on the project. “One of our initiatives for improving literacy in our community is increasing access to literacy bundles for mothersto- be when bringing home their ‘Bundle of Joy,’” she explained. “Thus, we are giving ‘Our Bundle of Joy for Your Bundle of Joy!’” These “bundles of joy” include two books that can be read to babies, foam alphabet letters, and information on expected literacy milestones for babies as they grow and mature. The resource has now been implemented at Memorial Health Meadows Hospital, which the school hopes will be a successful improvement to local literacy.
