Bulldogs Swept By Irish

The Bulldogs baseball team of Wheeler County High School ran into the Irish of Dublin last week in a three-game Region series. Dublin swept Wheeler in the series dropping the Bulldogs record to 8-13 overall and 8-12 in Region play. Then on Monday of this week, the Bulldogs made up a game against Wilcox County on the road in Rochelle.

Game 1

On Monday of last week, they played the first game of the series in Dublin. The Irish got off to a fast start with five runs in the first inning. They added two more in the second as they led the Bulldogs 7-0. Three more runs for the Irish in the third inning put them on top 10-0. Dublin held in the fourth and fifth innings to win the game by the run rule, 10-0. Drew Dixon led Wheeler with two hits in the game.

Game 2

The two teams met in Alamo on Friday for a double header. Wheeler was able to put a few more runs on the board in those two games, but still fell to the Irish.

In the first game of the day Dublin got the scoring started in the top of the second inning with two runs. They added two more in the third and then broke the game open with five runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Wheeler got on the board in the fifth as they plated three runs to close the lead to 9-3. Dublin picked up three more in the top of the seventh inning to push the lead to 12-3. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the seventh inning, but they fell to the Irish, 12-5.

Game 3

In the final game of the week, the Irish took the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Wheeler answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 1-1. Dublin went back on top in the top of the third inning with three more runs, but again the Bulldogs answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 4- 4.

But things got away from Wheeler in the top of the sixth inning as Dublin scored nine runs to take a 16-4 lead. Wheeler was held in the bottom half of the inning, giving Dublin the win, 16- 4.

Vs. Wilcox

On Monday the Bulldogs were on the road to make up a game against the Patriots of Wilcox. Wilcox got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning with two runs, but Wheeler went ahead in the top of the second as they plated four runs to take a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the second, though, Wilcox scored five runs to jump back on top, 7-4. They added four more in the third and two in the fourth to lead 13-4. Wheeler did add two more runs in the fifth inning, but three from Wilcox in the bottom half gave them the run rule win, 16-6. Wheeler will be on the road in Florida on Thursday as they face Mainland at 5:00 p.m., and then on Saturday against Father Lopez at noon. Both games will be in Daytona Beach.
