Historian Robert Hendrix has a passion for helping to preserve the past. Now that he has completed the work of documenting all the churches, cemeteries and gravesites in Telfair County, he has begun a similar project in Wheeler County. Hendrix’s study will locate and catalog grave locations with aerial photographs and drawings of each cemetery or gravesite indicating the exact location of each grave. Names, dates and locations of gravesites will then be placed into a database accessible to the public.

He will also be working to get pictures of the exteriors of churches located in the county, as well as a picture of the sanctuary of each church. This would include all active and inactive churches.

Citizens are asked to contact the Wheeler County Chamber of Commerce at 912-568-7808 with contact information for churches and cemeteries, or of gravesites not located in a cemetery. Along with pictures of the churches, historical information about each church or cemetery is also being compiled.
