RESPECT YOUR ELDERS BY GARY TOOLE Respect, what a small yet powerful word when used properly. It maintains order, controls chaos, commands discipline and leads a society. What a word! Amen! The other day I was talking to a probation officer and he is much younger than me, but to maintain his status quo he prefers to be called, “Mister,” rather than by his first name. In fact, if you are under his command and control, then he flat out insist that you show him proper respect, because as he said, “If you let one do it, then everybody is doing it.” Leaders must earn respect, command respect and demand respect. God commands us to respect our leaders. God expects parents to be good examples and show respect to those that God has placed in leadership roles and He has charged us mightily to teach our children proper respect for the elder, law enforcement, the leaders of this great land and even greater the leaders ofthechurch. Amen! Iwas talking to an instructor at this technical school and she said, “With students you must demand proper respect. Yes ma’am and no ma’am and Miss or Mrs.” Respect, we need it! We must have it to maintain an orderly society and God holds the leaders responsible when it comes to the church. We must teach and preach respect. We must expect respect. We must command and demand respect. In the church I came up in, it was brother so and so and sister so and so. Anybody at least five years older than us and more it was, “Yes sir and no sir and yes ma’am and no ma’am!” In humor I always say that if you are confused about who is your elder, then if he shaves, is wrinkled and grey headed, then he’s probably your elder. Respect, don’t leave home without it! Can you say amen? PD. ADV.
