The Vidalia City Schools Board of Education (BOE) has announced their intention to increase property taxes by not accepting the rollback rate.
At the Board’s regular monthly meeting on September 9, the Board has proposed to set continued from page
the millage rate at 15.000 mills for all Vidalia residents, instead of accepting the rollback rates –- the rates that produce the same tax revenue as last year’s millage rate would have had no reassessments occurred –- of 14.852 for citizens living in the Montgomery County portion of the city and 14.862 for residents living in the Toombs County portion of the city.
This proposed increase is equivalent to an increase of $5.92 for a house with a fair market value of $100,000 in the Montgomery County portion of the city and $5.52 for a home with a fair market value of $100,000 in the Toombs County portion of the city. These increases average to a 1.25% increase for Vidalia/ Toombs County residents and a 1.6% increase for Vidalia/Montgomery County residents.
The Board stated that this increase was needed to fund the district’s adopted budget.
Three public hearings will be held to allow citizens to share their concerns or comments on the proposal. All hearings will be held at the Vidalia Board of Education, located at 1001 North Street West. The hearings will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 26; 6 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30; and 3 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14.
The final millage rate will be adopted at the Board’s regular monthly meeting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14.
