Lyons 12U Girls Are State Runner-up

The Lyons Recreation Department's 12U Girls softball team had a solid run in the GRPA State Tournament that was held at Toombs County High School. LRD battled their way back and forced a game 2 in the Championship, but couldn't quite pull out the win, taking 2nd place in the state. Vidalia came away with third place.

LRD vs. Wayne Co.

Lyons rolled in their first game of the tournament last Tuesday against Wayne County. Lyons scored the first run of the game in the second inning on an RBI single by Kensley Thomas. Lyons added three more in the third inning off of EBI hits from Aubrey Harrell and Bentlee Gardisser. That put LRD on top 4-0.

Lyons opened it up in the fourth inning with seven more runs to extend their lead to 11-0. Wayne scored one run in the top of the fifth inning, but it was not enough as LRD won, 11-1, by the run rule.

VRD vs. Colquitt Co.

Vidalia played their first game against Colquitt County. Vidalia couldn't get much going at the plate as they fell, 7-2. Colquitt jumped out with three runs in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. VRD picked up a run in the bottom of the first, but Colquitt added another in the top of the third to make the score, 4-1.

Colquittt added three more in the fourth inning, with VRD scoring one more run in the bottom of the fourth. That gave Colquitt a 7-2 win.

LRD vs. Colquitt Lyons then faced off with Colquitt in the next round. Lyons plated two runs in the first inning, and then added two more in the second on RBI singles from Preslie Mosley and Miley Smith. That put Lyons on top, 4-0.

Lyons scored four more runs in the fourth inning on the way to an 8-0 win.

VRD vs. Wayne Co.

In the losers' bracket, Vidalia faced off with Wayne County. VRD rolled to an easy win over Wayne to keep their tournament alive. This game was over after the first inning as Vidalia put 15 runs on the board. Wayne did score three runs in the bottom of the first, but VRD went on to win the game, 16-3.

VRD vs. Murray Co.

Vidalia then faced off with Murray County and pulled out a 12-8 win. VRD took the early lead with two runs in the second inning, but Murray plated five in the third inning to jump ahead, 5-2. Vidalia added three more in the fourth to tie the game at 5-5.

Vidalia took the lead in the fifth inning with one run, but Murray tied it in the bottom of the frame at 6-6. Each team scored one more in the sixth inning to send the game to extra innings, tied at 7-7. Vidalia took the lead in the top of the seventh inning with five more runs, and then allowed just one in the bottom of the inning to take the win, 12-8.

VRD vs. Colquitt Co.

Vidalia had a rematch with Colquitt County in the next round, and got some revenge as they took the win, 6-0.

Vidalia was steady in this game as they scored two runs in the first inning, one in the second, and two more in the third to build up a 5-0 lead. Vidalia added one more in the fifth inning on the way to the 6-0 win.

LRD vs. Emanuel Co.

Lyons out hit Emanuel, 8-6, in the game, but it was not enough, as they couldn't get the big hits when they needed them.

Lyons scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning, but Emanuel came back with six runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead.

Lyons couldn't get any more runs across the plate as they lost to Emanuel County, 6-1.

LRD vs. VRD

That set up Lyons and Vidalia in the semifinals of the losers' bracket. The story of this game was Aubrey Harrell in the circle for Lyons as she struck out 12 Vidalia batters and walked none.

Vidalia picked up their only run of the game in the top of the second inning to take the early lead. Lyons tied the game on a sacrifice in the bottom of the third inning, and then came back and took the lead in the fourth with three more runs on a bases loaded walk by Stella Peterson, and an RBI single by Preslie Mosley. That put Lyons on top, 4-1.

That was all Lyons needed as they held on to take the win by that score.

LRD vs. Emanuel Championship Game 1 This game was a pitching dual with a total of four hits in the game between both teams. The only run of the game was an unearned run scored by Lyons in the bottom of the sixth and final inning. That gave Lyons the win, 1-0, and forced a second and deciding game for the State Championship.

Game 2

The second game was an exciting one that came down to the final inning with Lyons fighting until the end, but falling by just one run.

Emanuel scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning, and added another in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Emanuel then scored two more in the fifth as they went ahead, 4-0, over Lyons.

Lyons kept battling as they got a run in the bottom of the fifth on a hit by Peterson to close it to 4-1. Then in the bottom of the sixth, Lyons had runners on base, a hit by Smith brought in two runs to close the lead to 4-3. Lyons still had runners on base, but a hard line drive was snagged by the Emanuel shortstop, ending the game, with Lyons falling 4-3.

Lyons gave it their all, but came up just short and were the State Runner-up.
