Busy Week For Lady Bulldogs

The Toombs County High School Lady Bulldogs softball team played six games last week as they took part in the Jeff Davis Tournament on Friday and Portal's Diamond Day on Saturday. They also played Treutlen County on Tuesday and Tattnall County on Thursday. vs. Treutlen

The Toombs County Lady Dog Softball team traveled to and defeated Treutlen 11-0 as two Bulldog pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Shaylin Stringer and Krista Cantwell allowed only 1 hit in the shutout win.

The Lady Dawgs got on the board in the first inning, as an error and two hits scored three runs for the Dogs. Toombs County also tallied five runs in the fourth inning. Alexis Hart, Lara Zamorano, Natalie Quintero, Emerson Powell, and Casey Cantwell each had RBIs in the frame.

Shay Stringer earned the victory in the circle for the Bulldogs. Stringer allowed zero hits and zero runs over three innings, striking out five and giving up only one walk. Cantwell threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Zamorano, Aniston Powell, Cantwell, Autumn Jarriel, Hart, Mishi Smith, Nora Grace Mercer, and Riley Lumley each managed one hit to lead Toombs County.

Coach Hayne Brant stated, 'All of our Dogs played hard today. We were able to get our young girls into the game early and let them experience some success.' vs. Tattnall

On Thursday, the Toombs County Lady Dog Softball team traveled to Reidsville to square off in the second region of three region games versus the Tattnall County Warriors. While both teams were strong on the rubber, Tattnall County was just a little bit stronger at the plate in a victory over Toombs County winning by a score of 1-0.

Shay Stringer started the game for Toombs and allowed 4 hits, but only 2 of those hits made it out of the infield. Shay pitched all 6 innings, giving up one unearned run while striking out 4 and walking none.

Aniston Powell led the Lady Dogs with 2 hits in the night. Another bright spot for the Dogs was the defensive effort by the freshman shortstop Emerson Powell.

Head Coach Hayne Brant said, “We have to do a better job at the plate. We had chances to manufacture a couple of runs, but we were not able to get the job done. Both Powell sisters played outstanding. We need to build off of their efforts tonight as we go into a tough region week next week.”

Jeff Davis Tournament

On Friday, the Toombs County Lady Dog Softball team traveled to Hazelhurst to take part in the Jeff Davis Tournament. vs. Lanier

In the first game, the Lady Dogs fell behind early when Lanier County took the lead on a groundout in the first inning.

A double by Riley Lumley in the first inning was positive for the Lady Dogs.

From there, the Dogs struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Lanier County, giving up eight runs. Unfortunately, they couldn’t come back and lost by a score of 8-0.

Krista Cantwell led things off in the pitcher’s circle for Toombs County. The righty surrendered eight runs on nine hits over five and 1/3 third innings, striking out three and walking one.

against Irwin County, the Dogs were tied 4-4 before the game was canceled in the fourth inning due to weather.

Portal Diamond Day

On Saturday, the Toombs County Lady Dog Softball team stayed busy traveling to Portal for a game against the Swainsboro Tigers and Portal Panthers.

In the first game, Toombs County jumped out to an early lead over Swainsboro and took home a 10-4 victory. The Lady Dogs scored on a single by Aniston Powell in the first inning, and singles in the second inning by Casey Cantwell, Powell, and Kassidy Brantley. The Lady Dogs also put up five runs in the sixth inning to pull away for good. The Dogs were led by Cantwell, Nora Grace Mercer, Shay Stringer, and Brinley Miller, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.

Stringer led the Lady Dawgs to victory in the pitcher’s circle. The lefty allowed seven hits and four runs over seven innings, striking out 12.

Toombs County hit one home run on the day with Cantwell going deep in the sixth inning.

Toombs County scattered 11 hits in the game. Stringer, Brantley, Emerson Powell, Cantwell, and Powell each managed multiple hits for The Lady Dawgs. A. Powell, Cantwell, E. Powell, Brantley, and Stringer each collected two hits to lead the Dawgs. vs. Portal In the second game versus Portal, Casey Cantwell had all the right stuff for The Lady Dogs, allowing zero runs and besting Portal by a score of 5-0. She was the winning pitcher for Toombs County. Cantwell lasted seven innings, allowing three hits and zero runs while striking out ten and walking zero. The Lady Dawgs fired up the offense in the first inning, when Kassidy Brantley grounded out, scoring one run. Riley Lumley went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the way for the Lady Dogs. Coach Brant added, “I am super proud of how we played this weekend. We started swinging the bats better against some good pitching. We have to carry this momentum into region play.”
