Bulldogs Battle to Pair of Wins


The Toombs County High School Bulldogs baseball team showcased their resilience this past week, securing two hard-fought victories to build momentum ahead of their region schedule. The Bulldogs edged out the Screven County Gamecocks 3-2 at home on Monday, before traveling to Athens on Friday and rallying for a 6-4 win over the Prince Avenue Christian Wolverines. vs. Screven Co.
Monday’s matchup was a true pitcher’s duel, but Toombs County managed to hold off Screven County for a 3-2 victory. The Gamecocks struck first with a run in the top of the opening inning. The Bulldogs responded in the bottom half, taking the lead after Lawton Toole and Tyson Brantley drew bases-loaded walks to plate a pair of runs.
After Screven County tied the game in the top of the third on a bases-loaded walk by Wyatt Sowell, Toombs County answered again. In the bottom of the fourth, Nick Carroll delivered a clutch double to score a run and give the Bulldogs a 3-2 advantage they would not relinquish.
Ty Hutchinson earned the win on the mound, battling through for five innings while allowing seven hits and two unearned runs, striking out five and walking four. Carroll and Riley Kersey slammed the door with scoreless innings in relief to preserve the win.
Carroll and Brantley each finished with an RBI. Joseph Owens stole three of the team's four total bases in the game.

On Friday, the Bulldogs found themselves in a back-and-forth battle against the Wolverines in Athens. Prince Avenue struck first with a run in the bottom of the opening frame. Toombs County quickly answered in the second when a well-executed sacrifice bunt by Tyler Brantley led to the tying run.
Capitalizing on Wolverines errors in the top of the fourth, the Bulldogs plated two runs to take a 3-1 lead. However, Prince Avenue surged back in front with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. Trailing 4-3 in the sixth, Toombs County dug deep.
The offense exploded for three runs in the inning, highlighted by a massive two-RBI single from Ryder Sears. The pitching staff then locked it down to secure the 6-4 road victory.
TCHS is currently 6-7 on the season and begin Region play this week.
The Bulldogs now turn their attention to the start of their region schedule as they face Savannah Country Day in a crucial threegame series. The action kicks off Thursday with a 6:00 p.m. matchup in Savannah, followed by a doubleheader at home in Lyons on Friday starting at 4:00 p.m.
