Eagles Fall to Rebels in Season Opener
The Montgomery County High School Eagles baseball team faced a challenging start to their season last week as they traveled to take on the Rebels of Atkinson County. The season opener proved difficult for the visiting Eagles, who fell to the Rebels 11-1 in a game shortened to five innings by the run rule.
Atkinson County seized control of the game early, establishing momentum with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Rebels continued their offensive pressure in the third, adding another three runs to extend their lead to a commanding 6-0. The Eagles fought to contain the Rebel lineup but struggled to find their footing defensively during the initial innings.
Montgomery County managed to break the shutout in the top of the fourth inning. Ramsey Jordan delivered a crucial RBI hit that drove in Luke Burns, putting the Eagles on the board and briefly narrowing the deficit. However, the Rebels responded decisively in the bottom of the frame, plating three more runs to stifle any potential rally. Atkinson County secured the victory by adding two final runs in the fifth inning, bringing the contest to an early close.
The Eagles will look to rebound from the loss with a busy schedule this week. Montgomery County returns to action on Thursday when they host Jenkins County, with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The team will then travel on Friday to face Telfair County in a doubleheader, with the first game of the evening set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
