The seventh-ranked Vidalia High School Indians baseball team are heading back to the state championship series for the first time since 2022. After a gritty road sweep over the sixth-ranked Bleckley County Royals in Cochran last week, the Indians have secured their spot in the GHSA Class A Division 1 State Championship. However, the triumph brings a bittersweet logistical hurdle, as Friday's championship doubleheader collides directly with the school's graduation ceremonies.

Game 1

The semifinal series opened with Vidalia making an early statement. Ryan Brantley set the tone in the top of the first inning, launching a two-run home run to give the Indians a quick lead.

The offense stayed hot in the second inning, pushing three more runs across the plate. Cayden Nance delivered a tworun double, followed immediately by an RBI single from Veer Patel to extend the lead to 5-0. Eion Ryals added an RBI hit in the sixth to cap the scoring for Vidalia. Patel commanded the mound to earn the win, keeping the Royals scoreless until the bottom of the seventh in a decisive 6-1 victory.

Game 2

Game two tested Vidalia's resilience, requiring ten innings of grueling baseball to complete the sweep. Bleckley County jumped on the Indians early, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Vidalia managed to push a run across in the bottom half to cut the deficit, then erupted in the fourth. Ryals drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Nance connected for a clutch two-run triple, and Brantley followed with an RBI single to give the Indians a 5-3 advantage.

Bleckley County refused to fold, plating two runs in the top of the seventh to force extra innings. Both bullpens continued from page

threw zeroes through the eighth, ninth, and top of the tenth. In the bottom of the tenth, Clay Mimbs finally broke the deadlock, ripping a walk-off home run to left field to seal the 6-5 win and send the Indians to Columbus.

State Championship

The final hurdle for the Indians’ quest for a fourth state title in program history is a formidable one. Vidalia will face the top-ranked Gordon Lee Trojans at Synovus Park. The Trojans boast a staggering 36-2 record and are fresh off a dominant Final 4 performance, having swept fourth-ranked Worth County with backto- back 8-0 and 5-0 shutouts. Gordon Lee knocked the Indians out of the playoffs last season in the Final 4, and VHS is looking for revenge.

The championship series kicks off with a doubleheader on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Game two will follow shortly after. If a deciding game three is necessary, it will take place Saturday at 12:00 p.m.

The 11:00 a.m. start time for Friday's doubleheader presents a scheduling conflict for the team’s seniors. Vidalia High School’s graduation is slated for 7:30 p.m. Friday evening. With travel time from Columbus back to Vidalia factored in, the players will more then likely not make it back for graduation. After discussions with the Georgia High School Association to find an alternative schedule proved unsuccessful, the district acknowledged they are actively preparing a separate ceremony for the players which will be held on Sunday at 4:00 p.m..

Vidalia City Schools Superintendent Dr. Sandy Reid addressed the difficult situation, “We have truly agonized over this decision because we care deeply about every student and every family involved,” Reid stated. “Our goal has always been to do what is best for all of our students while honoring both an incredibly special graduation milestone and an unforgettable opportunity for our baseball team. Unfortunately, despite exhausting every effort to find an alternative solution, we found ourselves in a situation with no perfect answer. We are grateful for the understanding and support of our families and community as we work together to celebrate these students in every way possible.”
