The Vidalia High School Indians baseball team delivered a complete performance in their Sweet 16 matchup, sweeping the Model Blue Devils in two games at Greg James Field to punch their ticket to the Elite Eight. Game 1 In a tightly contested opener, the Indians relied on dominant pitching and a clutch late inning to secure the win. The game remained scoreless through five innings before Vidalia broke through in the sixth.
Sophomore Ryan Brantley sparked the offense with a double, and after an intentional walk to Veer Patel, Clay Mimbs stepped up in a big moment. After an eight-pitch at-bat, Mimbs drove a double into the left-center field gap just past the outstretched glove of the left fielder, bringing in two runs and giving the Indians a 2-0 lead.
That was all senior right-hander Veer Patel needed as the Indians hung on the win, 2-0.
Patel was outstanding on the mound, throwing a complete game shutout with zero walks and eight strikeouts, keeping the Blue Devils off balance all night. Game 2
The Indians carried their momentum into Game 2 and quickly took control. Vidalia got on the board in the first inning with an RBI groundout before exploding for eight runs in the second inning to put the game out of reach.
Reece Wall led off the big inning with an RBI single, followed by an error that scored another run. Cayden Nance added a sacrifice fly, and Veer Patel drove in a run with a single. Banks Hopkins delivered the biggest hit of the inning with a three-run double, and Wall capped the scoring with another RBI single.
Vidalia took the win in the second game, 13-3.
On the mound, Banks Hopkins earned the win with a strong performance, allowing just two hits and one unearned run while striking out one and walking two.
The Indians finished with 10 hits in the game, led by Hopkins, who recorded two doubles and three RBIs. Ryan Brantley and Reece Wall each added two hits to pace the offense.
With dominant pitching in Game 1 and an explosive offensive showing in Game 2, the Indians completed the sweep and now move on to the Elite Eight, continuing their strong postseason run.
