Vikings Wrap Regular Season
The Treutlen County High School Vikings closed out a stellar regular season last week, finishing with a 22-7 overall record and an 11-2 mark in region play. Despite a tough close to the schedule that saw them drop two of their final three contests and slip to second place in the region standings, the team is hitting the reset button as they gear up for the GHSA State Baseball Playoffs.
The Vikings had been cruising with an unblemished 11-0 region record before running into Wilcox County in a decisive series. Wilcox managed to take two of the three games, including Thursday’s pivotal matchup, to edge out Treutlen for the top spot and claim the region title. vs. Tattnall The final week of regular- season play began on a high note with a commanding 10-2 road victory over the Tattnall County Warriors on Tuesday. Treutlen jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first inning when Acie Dickens drove an RBI double to put the Vikings up early. The offense kept grinding, adding two more in the third on sacrifices from Peyton Miller and Jack Walker. Steady production in the middle innings built a comfortable 7-0 advantage by the fifth. After the Vikings tacked on two more in the top of the sixth, the Warriors finally broke through for a pair of runs in the bottom half. Treutlen added a final insurance run in the seventh to cap the scoring and seal the win. continued from page
vs. Wilcox
Thursday’s region showdown with Wilcox proved to be the stumbling block of the week. Wilcox struck first with a run in the opening frame, but the Vikings fought back in the fourth. A clutch hit by Gavin Wood, coupled with a costly Wilcox error, allowed Treutlen to take a 2-1 lead.
The advantage, however, was short-lived. Wilcox responded aggressively in the bottom of the fourth, erupting for five runs to take a 6-2 lead. Treutlen managed to scratch across one more run in the sixth but couldn't close the gap, falling 6-3. vs. Tattnall
Looking to bounce back in Friday's regularseason finale against Tattnall, the Vikings struck early. A run in the bottom of the first and another in the third gave Treutlen a 2-0 lead that held late into the game.
The pitching and defense eventually wore down, as Tattnall managed a run in the top of the sixth before a threerun rally in the seventh stunned the hometown crowd. The Vikings couldn't muster a comeback in their final at-bat, dropping a tough 4-2 decision.
The regular season is in the books, and the focus is solely on what comes next. The Vikings return home this Wednesday to host the Mt. Zion Eagles in the first round of the state playoffs. The best-of-three series kicks off with a doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m. If a decisive third game is needed, it will be played Thursday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
