Toombs County Wins 2-3 Nonregion Games
The Toombs County Bulldogs baseball team saw plenty of action this past week, showcasing their offensive firepower and resilience before ending a three-game stretch with a tough road loss. Walking away with two wins out of three, the Bulldogs moved to 11-8 on the season, keeping their 3-0 Region record intact as they head into a critical stretch. vs. Burke Co.
The week opened on Monday with a trip to Burke County, where Toombs simply overwhelmed the home team in a 14-1 rout. It was a complete performance, anchored by a pitching staff that refused to give an inch and a lineup that wore the opposing arms down.
Kersey set the pace, earning the win with three scoreless innings, scattering three hits, and striking out three without issuing a single walk. Carroll followed up with a sharp two-inning relief appearance, striking out four.
At the plate, the Bulldogs were methodical. After scratching out a 2-0 lead in the fourth behind an Owens triple and a Carroll sacrifice fly, Toombs blew the doors off in the seventh. An eight-run explosion put the game entirely out of reach, featuring RBI hits from Carroll, Riley Kersey, Ryder Sears, and a triple by Lawton Toole. The discipline was just as impressive as the power; the team drew 11 walks on the day, perfectly complementing a 15-hit attack led by Kersey's flawless 4-for-4 performance. It was clean, error-free baseball that prompted head coach Derek James to praise his team's composure and late-game discipline. vs. ECI
Returning home Wednesday to host Emanuel County Institute, the Bulldogs had to prove they could take a punch. ECI jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Toombs didn’t flinch. They immediately answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame, sparked by a Riley Kersey RBI, and then seized the lead in the second when Grayson Fulmer drove in a run with a clutch single. Ryder Sears handled his business on the mound to pick up the win, and the offense tacked on two more in the sixth to close out a gritty 5-2 victory. vs. Glynn Aca.
The momentum finally hit a wall on Thursday against the Terrors of Glynn Academy. Sometimes you run into a buzzsaw on the road, and Glynn Academy was exactly that, putting up five runs in the first inning and another five in the third to build an insurmountable 10-0 lead. The Bulldogs couldn't find their rhythm, managing their only run of the game in the fourth inning off an RBI from Brody Benton before eventually falling 11-1.
Now, it's all about Region play over the remainder of the regular season. The Bulldogs are currently locked into a crucial three-game series against Savannah Christian. Following Monday's opener in Savannah, Toombs will be back under their home lights this Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. They will then hit the road again Thursday to wrap up the series in Savannah at 6:00 p.m.
