Bulldogs Soccer Sweeps Woodville
It was a week of early highs and a narrow lateweek loss for the Toombs County High School soccer programs as they battled through their final slate of games before Spring Break. The Bulldogs defended their home turf admirably on Tuesday, securing a sweep over the visiting Woodville-Tompkins Wolverines, before the girls' squad dropped a hard-fought road contest against St. Vincent's on Thursday.
Girls vs. Woodville
Tuesday’s opener saw the Lady Bulldogs execute a beautifully balanced offensive attack against Woodville-Tompkins. The teams traded blows early, heading into the halftime break locked in a 1-1 tie. However, Toombs County took complete control in the final 40 minutes. The Lady Bulldogs spread the ball effectively, rattling off three unanswered goals in the second half to pull away for a decisive 4-1 victory. Mishi Smith, Aubrey Gay, Emerson Powell, and Danaka Robbins each found the back of the net to help seal the win.
Boys vs. Woodville
The boys' matchup that followed proved to be a genuine test of resilience. The Wolverines jumped out to an early advantage, netting a pair of first-half goals while holding Toombs to just one, carrying a 2-1 lead into the intermission. The Bulldogs dug in and regrouped, finding an equalizer in the second half to knot the score at 2-2 and force overtime. In the extra period, Toombs County managed to break through the Wolverine defense, sinking the game-winner to cap off a gritty 3-2 comeback victory. Daniel Santoyo paced the Toombs offense with two crucial goals, while Juan Luna provided the other tally.
Girls vs. St. Vincent's
On Thursday, the Lady Bulldogs traveled to take on a traditionally tough St. Vincent’s program. Toombs County struck first, with Kanijah Toby slipping a shot past the keeper in the opening half to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage at the break. The Saints, however, found their offensive stride in the second half, putting up a trio of goals to swing the momentum. Toby managed to score once more for Toombs, but the late push wasn't quite enough as the Lady Bulldogs ultimately fell to the Saints, 3-2.
The week's results move the Lady Bulldogs to 6-5 on the season, carrying an even 2-2 mark in Region play. The boys currently sit at 6-4 overall and hold a solid 2-1 Region record. Both squads will take this week off to rest and recover during Spring Break before returning to the pitch to resume their season next week.
