Bulldogs Fall To Vikings

The Wheeler County High School Bulldogs baseball team ran into a difficult matchup on Monday afternoon, dropping their only contest of the week to the rival Treutlen County Vikings in a 10-0 road loss that ended early via the run rule. It was a frustrating outing for a Wheeler squad that just couldn't seem to find its footing against a surging Treutlen lineup.

The Vikings controlled the tempo from the opening frame, making it a long afternoon for the Bulldogs' defense. Treutlen got their offense rolling right out of the gate, pushing across a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. They kept the pressure on in the second, plating two more to build a quick 4-0 advantage and put Wheeler on their heels early in the contest.

Any hopes of a late Wheeler rally were effectively dashed in the fourth inning. The Vikings' bats caught fire for a five-run surge, stretching the deficit to nine and putting the game well out of reach. Treutlen then scratched across one final run in the bottom of the fifth to seal the 10-0 victory and bring the afternoon to an early close. The loss drops Wheeler to 4-10 overall on the season and puts them at 3-5 in Region play. It's a tough stretch for the Bulldogs, but they have immediate opportunities to shake off the rivalry loss and get back in the win column on the road.

Wheeler traveled to face Dodge County on Monday in a matchup that concluded after presstime. Following that contest, the Bulldogs will be right back on the diamond this Wednesday, heading to Clinch County for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch.
