Indians Start Season Strong


The Vidalia High School Indians baseball team opened their season in solid fashion last week, sweeping four games to secure a perfect 4-0 start. The Indians’ bats were alive early and often, powering them to back-to-back series sweeps over the Dodge County Indians and the Islands Sharks. vs. Dodge Monday The season opener on Monday set the tone for the week as VHS traveled to face Dodge County. After a quiet start, Vidalia broke the game open in the top of the third inning with four runs. The offense continued to press, adding two runs in the fourth and another pair in the fifth to build a commanding 8-0 lead.
While Dodge County managed to put two runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh, Vidalia had already secured the game with a final four-run outburst in the top of the frame. The Indians cruised to a 12-2 victory to start the year. vs. Dodge Wednesday The Indians returned to the diamond on Wednesday for a rematch against Dodge County, this time delivering a swift three-inning knockout. Although Dodge struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, Vidalia responded immediately with five runs in the bottom half of the frame.
After tacking on a single run in the second, the VHS offense exploded for 10 runs in the third inning. This offensive surge invoked the run rule, handing Vidalia a crushing 16-1 win.
vs. Islands Thursday
On Thursday, the Indians hit the road to face the Sharks of Islands in a game that turned into an offensive marathon. Vidalia took control early, scoring a run in the first and four in the second to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Islands managed to cut the deficit to 5-1 in the fourth, but Vidalia responded with three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Despite the Sharks scoring two in the bottom of the sixth, Vidalia saved their best for last. They erupted for 11 runs in the top of the seventh inning to seal a massive 22-3 victory. vs. Islands Friday
The week concluded back in Vidalia on Friday with a more defensive battle against Islands. The Indians wasted no time, putting up four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead.
From there, pitching and defense took over, silencing both lineups until the bottom of the sixth. Vidalia added two insurance runs late to cap off the night with a 6-0 shutout, completing an undefeated opening week.
This week VHS was at Appling County on Monday after presstime. They will travel to South Effingham on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m., host Callaway at 5:45 p.m. on Friday and host Heard County on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
