The area has been filled with a smoky haze as fires have spread throughout the community because of low humidity, dry conditions, and wind.
Local fire departments are urging citizens to refrain from burning outdoors and to use extreme caution with fire pits, grills, equipment that may spark, and even cigarettes, as the current conditions could cause fire to spread rapidly.
A brush fire quickly spread around the areas of Georgia Highway 297 and Blaxton Road, causing the Vidalia Fire Department to issue a smoke advisory continued from page
to citizens to warn that the haze may cause a decreased line of sight while driving.
The City of Vidalia also issued a burn ban on Tuesday, January 13, as they outlawed open burning within the city until further notice. The ban cites dry fuel sources, low humidity, and increased wind as the reason for the ban, and assures that the temporary legislation will be strictly enforced.
Higgston Fire Chief Chris McLendon also urged citizens in the surrounding areas not to burn as he stated, “Fires can start easily and spread rapidly, even with light winds. Report any smoke or fire immediately. Your cooperation is critical to protecting lives, homes, and our community.”
Agencies assured that the public would be updated when conditions changed, but encouraged the community to remain cautious and vigilant in their activities.
