Wheeler Stumbles On Hardcourt
It was a tough weekend for the Wheeler County High School basketball teams as both the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs dropped back-toback contests against Bacon County and Jeff Davis.
Friday vs. Bacon Co.
The teams traveled to Alma on Friday to face the Bacon County Raiders. In the girls' matchup, the Lady Bulldogs battled to keep the game within reach throughout the night. Despite an impressive offensive performance from Nikita James, who poured in 22 points, Wheeler County ultimately fell by a score of 49-41.
The boys’ game on Friday saw the Bulldogs fight back from an early deficit. Bacon County led 12-9 after the first quarter and extended that advantage to 27-18 at halftime. Wheeler County rallied in the third period, surging ahead to take a 37-34 lead. However, the Raiders regained control in the final quarter, pulling away to secure a 56-45 victory. Saturday vs. Jeff Davis
On Saturday, the Bulldogs returned home to host the Jeff Davis County Yellow Jackets. The Lady Bulldogs struggled to find their rhythm offensively against a stout Jeff Davis defense, resulting in a 53-24 loss.
The boys' finale was a high-scoring affair. Michael Wright Jr. had a massive night for the Bulldogs, leading the floor with 33 points. Justin Culver added 13 points, while Reco Wooten and Tyree Travis contributed 10 points each. Despite the offensive production, Wheeler County could not hold off the Yellow Jackets, falling 74-65.
This week Wheeler will host Bryan County on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
