The Boys and Girls Club of Toombs County will work to combat local childhood hunger this summer, as they have received the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation “Summers Without Hunger” grant.

This grant supports community-feeding partners across the Eastern U.S. by providing funding to these organizations working to combat food insecurity and promote healthier lifestyles through nutrition education. The grant is specifically earmarked to be used for summer feeding and food nutrition programs, as research has found that childhood hunger often spikes during the summer months because of the pause in school-based meal programs. This increase in childhood hunger can be detrimental to youth, as it leaves lasting physical, mental, and educational impact.

The grant is funded through the Summers Without Hunger Campaign, which was held from June 18 until July 15. During this period, Food Lion customers and participating vendors purchased reusable shopping bags – each costing $2 – and all proceeds were donated to these grants, which will provide more than 28 million meals to children facing food insecurity during their summer break from school.

The Boys and Girls Club of Toombs County CEO Marcy Lane shared her gratitude for the funding. “This grant will have an incredible impact on the youth we serve. With the rising costs of food and other essentials, many of our families rely on the nutritious meals we provide through our programs. [This] support ensures that our members continue to have access to balanced, healthy meals— fueling not just their bodies, but also their potential to grow, learn, and thrive,” she remarked.

Lane continued, “We are beyond grateful for this partnership and for the opportunity to continue our mission of empowering young people to reach their full potential. Our hearts are full of appreciation for your continued investment in our community and in the lives of the children we serve daily. Thank you for believing in our work and helping us make a lasting difference. We look forward to sharing the wonderful impact of this grant in the months ahead.”

The Club is now working to plan the usage of this grant during the summer months to provide both food and nutrition education programs to local students.
